DDR4 Outpaces DDR5 as Legacy Supply Dries Up

The previous memory generation is now outperforming the current one. Barclays' October memory market report shows DDR4 contract prices up 4% month on month and 24% over three months, against 3% and 20% for DDR5 over the same windows. Measured across the quarter, DDR4 has overtaken DDR5 on price momentum.

Supply contraction is the driver. Samsung, SK hynix and Micron have largely completed their exits from consumer and data-centre DDR4, redirecting capacity to HBM and DDR5; only a small industrial and automotive DDR4 allocation remains, mainly at Micron. Because DDR4 and DDR5 slots are not interchangeable, the installed base of desktops, servers and industrial equipment has no substitute and keeps ordering DDR4 at almost any price.

The more consequential change is in how contracts are written. Barclays notes that new-customer supply agreements no longer carry a floor-and-ceiling price band and instead track the spot market, eroding the price protection that long-term agreements used to provide.

Spot momentum has already cooled: TrendForce data for 16 October put DDR5 16Gb spot up just 0.28% month on month, with DDR4 16Gb and 8Gb flat. Passives are tightening in parallel — TrendForce reports Samsung Electro-Mechanics raising fourth-quarter MLCC prices by 25%–30% on consumer X5R parts and 10%–20% on high-end X6S for AI servers.

For customers still on DDR4 platforms, we recommend securing volume quarter by quarter and writing an explicit price-adjustment clause into new agreements.
