Chip Exports Up 222.5%: the Memory Rally Is Real

The reality of this memory upcycle is now showing up in macro data. Korea Customs Service reported on 21 October that chip exports for 1–20 October rose 222.5% year on year, taking a 44.7% share of total outbound shipments — 16.2 percentage points higher than a year earlier — while total Korean exports grew 105.4%.

Pricing data points the same way. In its 20 October report, Citi estimated that SK hynix's third-quarter DRAM average selling price rose 28% quarter on quarter and NAND 24%, with revenue up 314% year on year, and projected enterprise SSD demand to grow 52.9% in 2027. These are Citi's estimates, not reported results.

Relief remains some way off. Citi expects the supply tightness to run through 2028. Micron's chief executive has said 2027 and 2028 will be tighter than this year, and Dell's Michael Dell said a new memory fab takes about four years, putting meaningful new capacity in 2029–2030.

Passives are tightening in step. Meritz Securities' October tracking shows Samsung Electro-Mechanics' MLCC lead times extended from more than 30 weeks in September to 52 weeks, with shortages spreading from high-capacitance parts to low-capacitance and automotive grades.

For buyers, the cycle matters more than the last decimal on a quote: plan safety stock and volume locks a year ahead for critical part numbers, and use staged-delivery terms so that a single price is not locked at the top of the market.
